LAIRG – a small, picturesque, rural village situated in central Sutherland, is an ideal touring base for the remote northern counties, with return excursions to the east, west and north coasts within a day’s access.

 

Features of Lairg are:-

  • Loch Shin - an excellent fishing loch which stretches for 18 miles into the rugged heart of Sutherland
  • Lairg Dam and Power Station on Little Loch Shin – the furthest north dam and hydro electric scheme built between 1954-58
  • Ord Hill – overlooking the village and loch, with its archaeological trail and ancient burial chambers going back 6,000 years
  • Rare Highland wildlife, including – otters, pine martins, wild cats, many varieties of deer, assorted waterfowl, red and black throated divers, birds of prey and unusual species of plant life
  • Forest walks and waterfalls – with the well known dramatic Shin Falls and salmon leap only five miles distant from the village.   • Hillside crofts – giving testimony to the fact that this is the home of crofting and the hardy, north country, cheviot sheep.
  • Colobol Bird Hyde - Where there is a chance to see local birdlife including locally nesting Ospreys
 
  • Murray Monument - Situated 4 miles out of Lairg in the area of Achfrish Shinness

  • Falls of Shin - Where you can see Scotish Salmon leaping up the falls
  • Fishing - Brown Trout, Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout permits are available from Park House Sporting, Sutherland

 

In Lairg you can still see evidence of life in bygone days,

savour the fresh Highland air, drive on quiet moorland roads,

enjoy uncluttered, wide open views of spectacular scenery,

majestic mountains and sunsets that take your

breath away.

 

For the outdoor sportsman there is plenty of scope for fishing on fast flowing rivers and hill lochs, stalking and shooting arrangements can be made, there are varied watersports on Little Loch Shin, bikes can be hired and within a day’s run there is hill walking on the most northerly Munros, rock climbing, and pot holing below More Assynt. Golf courses are within easy reach at Bonar Bridge, Dornoch, Golspie, Brora and Tain, and there is the Sutherland Swimming Pool Complex and Fitness Suite at Golspie.
